How Can You Combat Allergens at Home?

No one likes dealing with allergies, especially in their own home.

Fortunately, there are several ways to combat allergens and make your property the comfortable respite it should be.

Do you deal with allergies due to pet dander, smoke, dust or seasonal changes? Here’s how you can fight back — and keep your home’s air fresh, clean and high-quality.

Invest in an air purifier. Air purifiers filter the air and recirculate clean, allergen-free air back into your home. There are many versions: tabletop, freestanding and even whole-home systems. If you opt to use purifiers only in certain rooms (pet areas, bedrooms, etc.), make sure you choose one that’s the appropriate size for the room.

Changes filters regularly. HVAC and air purifier filters can get clogged quickly, especially in areas with lots of allergens, dust or smoke in the air. Make sure they get checked and swapped out regularly to keep your systems and devices working efficiently.

Add plenty of houseplants. While having a few plants likely won’t make a huge impact, studies show that certain plants can help filter out air pollutants — particularly dust, smoke and mold. Common options include spider plants, peace lilies, snake plants, English ivy and Boston ferns.

Use robotic vacuums. Having robotic vacuums stationed throughout the house (especially in carpeted areas) can help keep buildup of pet dander, dirt, dust and other allergens at bay. Make sure to have them programmed to a regular schedule for best results.
