Building a fully custom house can be a great way to ensure your home meets all of your needs — both aesthetically and functionally. The process will require working with a number of professionals, including an architect.

Your architect will be in charge of translating your needs and ideas into a tangible plan for your home’s construction. Cultivating a good rapport and relationship with them can be the key to success.

If you plan to build a custom home, here are some tips on communicating effectively with your architect.

Be clear about your expectations. Talk openly and honestly with your architect about what you expect from the process. Discuss your timeline, your budget and your communication preferences (email, text message, phone call, etc.).

Have a vision. You should have clear ideas for your finished home — goals for how you want it to function and feel. What’s your “why” for the property? Are you looking to create a relaxing retirement retreat, the perfect place for entertaining or your family’s hub for the long haul? Communicate this vision to your architect from the start.

Be honest. If you don’t like a feature or want something changed, speak up as soon as possible. Waiting will only make redesigns harder down the road, and it could delay your construction.

Stay in touch. Communication is key in a custom home build, so make sure you’re touching base regularly with your architect and other key players in the process. Give feedback in a timely manner, and help keep the project moving at all times.
